First time owning green anoles, is this a good setup? Are they doing alright?
I have 2 new green anoles. I’ve done lots of research on what they need, their habits and inclinations. I currently have 2 anoles (I believe a young male and an adult female) in a 7.5 gallon tank. I used 3 inches of compressed bark for bedding, I have a 40 watt incandescent bulb, an additional heat lamp to use during the day (to keep the temps between 80 and 90 degrees F, the 40 watt just isn’t cutting it alone), I have 2 thermometers placed inside, one near their basking areas and another nearer to the ground, a gauge to monitor humidity, a little hut as well as some nice driftwood for them to climb and hide under. I have a water bowl, but I don’t use it for water. I spray the inside of their cage 2 to 3 times a day and they drink the droplets. I gave them 6 vitamin powder covered small crickets today and both ate them right away. I also gave them meal worms but they aren’t interested.
My female is staying a brown color, which I read is a sign of stress. What more can I do?
You are doing great! A couple of things though.
First, 7.5 gallons is too small for even one anole. Your female might be stressed due to the male taking up all the space, especially if he is now a comfortable green. It is generally ideal to have 10 per anole, so having two, you should get a 20 gallon tank as soon as possible. Remember that they prefer tall tanks.
Second, UV is necessary for their survival. Replacing one of your day time bulbs with a UV bulb would do the trick. It should be on for 12 hours a day, and off at night. If you don’t want to purchase expensive lights, you could (when they trust you enough to be held) expose them to around 10 minutes of natural sunlight a couple times a week (the more the better, but about once or twice a week is okay). Be sure that they are outdoors, as glass blocks out UV.
