My Professor Thinks I Cheated On My Term Paper- What Should I Do?
<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>
Plagiarism is the dirtiest word in the university lexicon, and being accused of academic fraud is a daunting scenario for any student. Besides the accusing professor, you might have to face an academic review board or a meeting with your Dean, and the consequences of being found guilty of plagiarism can include losing credit for the course or being expelled from the university entirely. If you ever find yourself being accused of plagiarism on your custom term paper,, here are some things to keep in mind.
First, keep a cool head. Many students forget a couple of essential principles that pertain to modern academics if they are accused of cheating. The first basic principle is very basic to our society, but easy to overlook in the heat of the moment: Admit nothing that they don’t already know.
You see, there are a couple of ways you can be accused of plagiarism. The first way is if your school uses turnitin.com, or if your professor has found unmistakable similarities between your work and a document on the internet or another source. If this is the case, and you have copied directly, it is pretty much game over. You will have to show remorse, or in some cases, plead ignorance of the specific rules regarding plagiarism (this last is only useful if you ‘forgot’ to attribute something to a source; wholesale copying is difficult to defend under any circumstances). However, if your teacher only thinks that you have copied from another student, or used a custom term paper service to do your work, then you should certainly admit nothing. If your professor is basing his accusations off of speculation and conjecture, then you need to bear in mind important principle number two.
Principle number two is that in the modern university, you the customer have certain rights and privileges. Modern education has become a precarious balancing act between the rigorous standards of classical education, and the harsh demands of the academic marketplace. Most teachers like to imagine that they live entirely in the world of classical education and that economic factors do not play a role in important scholastic matters, but this is far from true. Today the student has a plethora of options as to where they can acquire their degree. If a teacher accuses you of plagiarism on your custom term paper but has no concrete proof, you might want to consider pleading to your Dean that your professor has a personal issue with you and that you would like to transfer to another class and teacher. If the accusations are false and you show that you want to continue your academic career without suspicion or harassment, you have a good chance of getting what you want. You have to remember that the school would like to keep you as a customer, and if you can make the school believe that it is not unreasonable to regard you as a student in good standing, then you have a very good chance at putting this behind you.
The last important principle to remember is that cheating cheats you, the student. However, if you decide you need to cheat and don’t have any other choice that is pleasant to you, then do so in ways that cannot be easily detected. Most obviously, don’t copy directly from web pages. This kind of cheating is easy to find either through turnitin.com or if your school doesn’t have that, the professor can do a simple google search of phrases from your paper. If you fail to attribute something to a source you may simply be reprimanded, but copying directly has the potential to get you caught every time. Also, if you pay someone to write an essay for you, remember that it is your responsibility to check that essay for plagiarism- using the simple google method aforementioned or a free online plagiarism checker. Don’t just assume that the custom term paper company has your best interests at heart.
