Do You See A Problem With Airing For Kids Un-PC Old Cartoons With Racial Content?
Cartoons could do a lot more in the 30s and 40s and some of the work would be considered very un-pc today and these cartoons haven’t aired in years.
One Looney Tunes cartoon had Bugs Bunny being hunted by a stereotypical black man in black-face going “I’z a gunna go catch me a wabbit today.”
Should these cartoons air today or should they remain hidden?
They’re funny either way. Still, if it bothers a particular parent, then they should make the judgment call FOR THEIR OWN KID.
But before you single out 60+ year old cartoons, consider modern TV.
Spike Lee once lamented that black characters on TV & the movies today generally tend to still be a variation of black stereotypes from back in the day. You’ll have black folks generally portrayed as baffoons in order to make an audience laugh. Think of most black characters on TV &, yep, black guys are usually comedy relief sidekicks playing up that they’re under the influence or just not that smart. Women are sometimes portrayed that way too, or they’re portrayed as this overly strong woman that needs to be, er, warmed up & brought down to size.
Yet because its a black face on TV not shown as the garbage man or the maid, its generally thought of as ‘advancement’. Think about a black drama lead today on TV & you’ll likely draw a blank.
Think of a black comedy relief like Snoop Dog, who’s made a career off of playing a black stoner stereotype, and you have to wonder how that character is ANY better than the black guy you saw chasing Bugs Bunny in that cartoon from the 40s?
