How did the UK term “nappies” (diapers in US) come to be?
I like listening to how people from other countries say alot of things, and I also like the different accents, but I was just curious on how US diapers got the UK term “nappies”
Originally the word diaper referred to the type of cloth used to make them rather than their use.
Diaper is a term for a pattern of small repeated geometric shapes and the first cloth diapers consisted of a special type of soft tissue sheet cut into geometric shapes.
Eventually ‘diaper’ gave its name to the cloth used to make diapers and then to the diaper itself.
This name stuck in the United States and Canada, but in Britain the word “nappy” took its place. Most sources believe nappy is a diminutive form of the word napkin but another possibility is that it refers to the ‘napped’ material that was used before the days of the disposable.
I wonder if they sell those big white headed nappy pins anymore?
