Bringing my DSLR to France?

So, I don’t know what to do. I have a Nikon D40 that I’m almost positive is going to France with me. All I’m really bringing is the body and the 18-55 lens, since I’m sure I could get some great pictures. However, I’m not sure if I should bring it or not. We will be doing a lot of walking, and I feel like carrying it everywhere will be a bit of a hassle versus if I had my point and shoot, also I’d be nervous of something happening to it. I have a messenger type bag for it (Actually, it’s a diaper bag, but it works.) so I could also use that for my other stuff, but I’m a bit conflicted. What do you think? I’m not a major photographer and I don’t want to risk something happening to my DSLR,.

Have you traveled with your DSLR, if so, what are your thoughts and just any advice in general would be great.

Well, are you very good at taking pictures with your DSLR? If so you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to take amazing shots in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. My one piece of advice is to make sure you keep a hand on the camera at all times, keep it in front of you not at your side or in a backpack, because while Europe is low in crime overall it is high in pick-pockets. You can always leave it in your hotel room if it proves too much to drag around but if you leave it at home and decide later that you want those amazing shots you will be out of luck. I also recommend taking it your carry-on lest it be lost in baggage.
